Direct integration means a provider applies to the NDIA’s Digital Partnership Office (DPO) for their own API access, building and maintaining the connection themselves, including a cyber security assessment as part of the approval process. Indirect integration means connecting through an existing approved software vendor or aggregator who already holds API access — the provider doesn’t apply to the NDIA directly and doesn’t carry the technical build or maintenance burden.
Decision comparison
| Factor | Direct integration | Indirect integration |
| Who applies to the NDIA | The provider | The aggregator/vendor (already approved) |
| Technical build required | Yes — against NDIA API specifications and PRODA B2B authentication | No — the vendor has already built it |
| Cyber security assessment | Required as part of DPO approval | Covered by the vendor’s existing approval |
| Ongoing maintenance | Provider’s responsibility as NDIA specifications change | Vendor’s responsibility |
| Time to first use | Longer — full application and technical build | Shorter — typically limited to vendor onboarding |
| Best suited to | Providers with in-house development resources wanting full control | Most providers — using existing NDIS billing software |
Why would a provider choose direct integration?
Direct integration makes sense when a provider has specific technical requirements not met by any existing vendor, has in-house development capacity, or wants full control over how the integration evolves over time. It’s a meaningfully larger undertaking than indirect integration and isn’t the default recommendation for most mid-market providers.
Why do most providers choose indirect integration?
Most providers don’t need to own the technical relationship with the NDIA’s APIs directly — they need the outcome (automated claiming, real-time status, reduced manual entry) that API access enables. Indirect integration through an existing digital partner delivers that outcome without the application overhead, cyber assessment, and ongoing maintenance burden of a direct build.
